TikTok And Instagram Is The New Search Engine! 40% Of Gen Z Use Social Media Instead Of Google

Ekdam se waqt badal diye. . .jazbaat badal diye! Yeah! We feel you Google! The undisputed king of search is slowly fading into oblivion with Gen Z gued into socials like Instagram and TikTok. A recent study by the search engine giant has some concerning observations. 40% of the youngsters use either Instagram or TikTok for search. Will Google go dodo like Yahoo or will it rejig its game?

Speaking at the Fortune Brainstorm Tech conference about emerging tech and future of the search engine giant, Senior Vice President Prabhkakar Raghwan, who runs Google’s Knowledge and Information Organization deliberated on how youngsters are dumping Google. Raghwan remarks –

We keep learning, over and over again, that new internet users don’t have the expectations and the mindset that we have become accustomed to.”

Apparently they don’t type in “keywords” anymore. The Gen Z are hooked to immersive content. Raghwan says that over 40% of youngsters don’t go check Google Maps or Search for new eateries. They do that on Insta or TikTok instead.

Google admits the figure to be shocking. It wasn’t enough as if TikTok and Insta Reels were eating away YouTube market shares, now Google’s ubiquitous search is on the chopping block! What about all the decade worth of curation of restaurants and pubs on Maps? Google might come up with a more visually immersive way of engaging the next generation of internet users born into smart devices unlike the millennials and the ones born just before the smart phones stormed into our lives for better or worse. Google has already been working on indexing popular TikTok and Instagram videos to show up on its feed. But users might not immediately wanna jump from the native app to a browser and search.

Long way to go Google. Uphill task for restaurant businesses to stay relevant.

For the millennials who only use Google, feel ancient yet?
